There were tons of outside events/experiences to be had at SDCC. There's a lot to do inside but a whole lot more to do outside. Best thing to do is try and do all the outside stuff on Thursday and Friday. On the weekend, you'll be competing with the locals and those who don't have SDCC passes because most of the stuff outside, anyone can participate.
